Why I changed my life path - a member story by Julie Street

New business ideas

Tell us about your business?

Life Path Career Coaching was established in September 2012 to assist clients in fulfilling their life and career aspirations, increase their knowledge, unlock their career potential, set goals, choose options and achieve their dreams.  With a mission statement of “With you, beyond the horizon”, I work with a client to go beyond their own horizon so that individuals reach their inner potential. As an accredited Life and Career coach my main purpose is to improve clients’ confidence to apply for their dream jobs.

Why did you start up your business?

I was tired, dissatisfied and unfulfilled in my previous HR Consultancy role working for Queensland Government. In 2011 there were 3000 voluntary redundancies on offer, I applied and was one of the lucky people who accepted a package. I always had a passion to work for myself, help others and start to do something that I love. The opportunity gave me time, resources and finances to study and then start my own business from home.

What are the major hurdles you experienced when starting your business?

· Not having a full-time income

· Getting the business advertised is tough and can be expensive

· Finding a reasonably priced website developer

What tips can you give other SavvySME members that are thinking or in the process of starting their own business?

Be prepared, write down your business ideas, processes, products, services and know your customers. Then research and research some more!

What made you decide to take the jump and focus on your business?

I just knew this was my new path and purpose in life. It had been there all along and I seized the opportunity and ran with it full steam ahead!

How did your family and friends react?

Extremely supportive and everyone gave me loads of encouragement and advice which was fantastic. I could not have started this journey without my husband who is the most important person in my life.

How has your life changed?

My life has vastly changed and definitely for the better. I am happy every day, full of energy, commitment, have a desire to help others and am motivated to be the best coach.

What is the vision for your business going forward?

As there is more pressure to perform at work from organisations, individuals are turning towards career and life coaches to guide them with support and encouragement to achieve personal goals and succeed in life. Within the next 9 months I want to achieve an 80% success rate for clients obtaining an interview, once their resume and cover letter have been updated and submitted for a vacancy.

What tips can you give other SavvySME about motivating yourself to push through the challenges that rise up while building your start-up?

Definitely keep focussed, get support from family and friends and then stick to your business plan for the first 12 months.
