New Federal Government Grants Available for SMEs

New Federal Government Grants Available for SMEs

The Australian Federal Government has released the Energy Efficient Communities Program Small Business Grants of up to $20,000.

If your business is a company incorporated in Australia (or co-operative, partnership or sole trader), and you have an ABN and a turnover of less than $10 million per year (based on BAS statements) then you could be eligible for the Federal Government Small Business funding for energy efficiency

Applications close on 26th August 2020.

What grant amounts are available?

The minimum grant amount is $5,000, and the maximum grant amount is $20,000. The funding can cover up to 100% of the eligible project costs meaning that there is no dollar for dollar contribution required. There are only three grants per electorate, so get in quick.

What are the project eligibility requirements?

To be eligible, your project must be aimed at reducing the energy consumption of your business and have at least $5,000 in eligible expenditure.

What can the grant be used for?

The grant is part of the government's support program for small businesses and it can be used for any of the following:

  • Replacing existing equipment with higher efficiency equipment (for example upgrading refrigeration condensers, lighting, heating or cooling units, etc)
  • Installing or replacing a component/s to help an existing system run more efficiently (ie air compressor, motors or heating upgrades or similar)
  • Carrying out energy audits to AS3598:2014 standards (we can help with that)
  • Carrying out monitoring of energy use and emissions

How can I apply?

To apply, you'll need to create your project, get some quotes or indicative costs and apply online through the government portal.

There are several documents to download, so be sure to download and read all of them prior to drafting the application.

Part of the application asks about the energy reductions expected as a result of the upgrade. For example, an application for lighting upgrade would need to include a statement that identifies the anticipated energy reduction (i.e. 60% energy reduction cost for lighting by replacing T8 fluro lighting with LED). Ensure you understand the value in terms of energy reduction for your business.

There is a sample word format application form that can be downloaded which we would highly recommend you use as a draft and complete it prior to starting the online form.

The application process is quite simple as long as you know what you want to do, what energy savings the project will provide and the amount being applied for.

Businesses can do the application themselves, or ask a consultant to assist.

To find out more or apply for the grant go to the Federal Government website.
