  • Building an SEO strategy is both an art and a science. It's important not to be rigid in your approach to creating content.
  • Things like benchmarking, detailed keyword research and calculating keyword density can help you, but always remember to optimise content for human users first above Google.
  • In this article, we delve into five tried and tested tips that will supercharge your SEO content strategy to help you rank higher and drive more traffic to your site.

Developing an SEO strategy is essential in creating valuable content for your website.

If your SEO strategy is linked with knowledge about the subject, choosing the right keywords, using creative metaphors, etc., you will create the perfect blend to rank higher and drive more traffic to your site.

It’s also important not to stick with one, rigid approach when creating content. The market is dynamic, and every year you can find more ways for your site to become noticed online. 2021 is no exception.

In this article, I will present you with some efficient tips to implement in your SEO strategy.

SEO Strategy Tips for 2021

The top five tips to help you build a strong SEO strategy are:

  1. Benchmark your ideas
  2. Build the subject with passion
  3. Pay attention to paragraph titles
  4. Do simple math for optimal keyword density
  5. Search for internal and external link opportunities

1. Benchmark Your Ideas

SEO strategy is based on detailed research before writing. You just need to have complete visibility of your subject.

Let me explain to you my way of doing it. I call it benchmarking.

This term was originally related to business analysis—it's when you compare the activities of other businesses against your own to assess performance gaps and ways to improve. You can judge which actions are good to adopt and those that should be avoided to get results.

Benchmarking works the same way with SEO project management, and thanks to this type of analysis you can define the selection, planning, and delivery of your SEO initiatives.

So, I decided to introduce a kind of benchmarking to my copywriting workflow.

I read other popular articles on the same or similar topics to mine and compare them to each other. It’s a great way to highlight the most relevant ideas.

If articles rank at the very top of search engine results, it’s a clear sign that the Google algorithm likes the content and also indicates that it's preferred by users.

Articles that rank highly are also likely to have a low bounce rate. Google knows when a user exits a web page straight away and when they decide to stay longer to read the article.

For example, when you can see the most popular content is “The Top [x] Lists”, it pays off to follow this trend and create your own list, e.g. “Top 10 Strategic War Board Games”. Your article is more likely to be popular across the Web.

However, you shouldn’t rely completely on trends. It can make your content too repetitive.

I recommend you to find some ideas that you consider important and underrated at the same time. Then, include them in your text so your content can stand out from the others. It can only result in a better position in search results.

Readers are more likely to be engaged in this type of content as it doesn’t only cover the basics on the specific topic but also gives a possibility to broaden the knowledge.

To put it simply, try to create content that provides value for everyone.

2. Build the Subject With a Passion

SEO keyword research should be put into effect from the very beginning of a project. After clarifying your idea, focus on creating a specific subject for your content.

It starts with an idea for your article. Don’t hesitate to use SEO research tools such as Ahrefs (I strongly recommend it).

As we talk about this SEO strategy, let’s stick to the example idea of “strategic board games”.

Write down this key phrase of your article in a search engine, click "enter" and the magic happens. You can see the context in which your phrase is used the most frequently.

First, include the keywords with the highest volume (the most popular). In this case, these are “top strategic board games” or “best strategic board games”. You know that you should use these phrases in the title and introduction of your article.

The next part of this SEO strategy is looking through the less popular keywords. This is when the subject of your article may be revealed. The phrase that draws my attention is “war strategic board games”. So, I link the two phrases together and as a result, I get “top war strategic board games”.

There's some good news: Google is smart enough to recognize other forms of keywords and their synonyms. So, instead of sticking with the same phrase, write down phrases of similar meaning in your keyword list and use them interchangeably.

How often should you use your keywords? We’ll move to it later.

Writing an article on this subject is bound to engage:

  • the Internet users who look for strategic board games with no specific expectations;
  • the die-hard war strategic board games fans.

So, you take it all. You can do this by creating a secondary keyword related to the main one (Ahrefs will help you). When you have them all, you’re free to move to the next step: preparing an outline.

3. Pay Attention to Paragraph Titles

An outline is in most SEO strategy templates, but you shouldn't stop there. Let’s learn how to do an outline efficiently.

First, split your subject into, let’s say, five ideas that deserve separate paragraphs. Then, it’s essential to think carefully about the titles for each one.

They should keep the reader engaged. To achieve that, avoid using general, impersonal sentences. They can only give your content an undesired sense of a scientific essay.

Use verbs to make your paragraphs more interesting and address the reader directly. This is how you grab their attention.

All words are important. For me, they need to follow the 3S rule - short, simple, strong. In other words, use language that appeals directly to the reader’s imagination. Leave definitions, comparisons, metaphors, etc. for the following paragraphs.

And what about mixed messages that can be understood only by you? It’s better to get rid of them completely.

When your titles are ready, list them in the outline of your article. Go back to it while writing to keep the rhythm.

4. Do Simple Math for Optimal Keyword Density

I know, math can be scary. But with this SEO keyword approach, it’s pleasant and helpful.

As soon as you have your list of keywords prepared, start to plan where to put them in your content. It’s not only about placement, but also the frequency of specific keywords. You should put them in your text with a feeling.

You’re a copywriter, definitely not a parrot that repeats the same phrase constantly with no sense of proportion. Google is smart enough to detect such content. And trust me, it doesn’t give it love.

This kind of content also has a bad influence on user experience. Texts with frequent repetitions are difficult to read.

So, how to make your content both optimized for Google Search and humans? The key is to pay attention to your keyword density. This is how you do it:

  • Set up the optimal number of keywords. I think five is enough.
  • Assume the approximate number of characters in your content. For example, let’s say it’s 10,000.
  • Divide the number of characters into the number of keywords. In this case, it will be 10,000/5 = 2,000.
  • There you have it - use a keyword at the beginning of your text, and then after every (roughly) 2,000 characters until the end.

That’s it. You have your content optimized and readable at the same time.

This is the efficient framework to find a balance between realizing your SEO plan and fulfilling your potential as a writer. Try it, it really works!

5. Search for Internal and External link Opportunities

Finishing the writing stage doesn't mean you've completed your SEO strategy. When you publish your article, it’s the right time to look for links between articles on your blog, as well as potential partnerships through the Web.

The Beatles had a hit “Here Comes the Sun”, but in this case here comes Ahrefs. Using this tool can help you search for both internal and external links.

What Are Internal Links?

Your website should be like a network of internal links. Every article should lead to another to keep the visitors for as long as you can.

For example, you write a detailed review of a war strategic board game, let’s say, "Twilight Struggle". Later, you mention this game in another article, "The Ranking of Top War Strategic Games".

So, if a reader wants to learn more about the Twilight Struggle, its gameplay, features, graphics, etc., feel free to include a link to your review. This is how you’ll meet their expectations.

Even when you miss it, Ahrefs is there to help you. Every week this tool makes the audit of your website and it gives possible connections between your blog posts. All you need to do is to edit the post and add the link to the suggested article.

SEO strategy makes your website work like a well-oiled machine.

What Are External Links?

OK, but you can’t make your website only a mutual admiration society. You should reach out to other sources, exchange links, and consequently strengthen your position in SERP (search engine results page).

How to do it?

Write down the main keyword of your content in the SEO tool, it can be Ahrefs, no surprise. In this case, it will be “strategic war board games”.

You’ll see other articles about the same or similar subjects. Choose between the ones from websites with DR (domain rating) over 40.

Now, you just need to find where the link to your article may be placed and contact the author or anyone else related to a particular website. Express your admiration and ask whether they’re interested in exchanging links.

Most importantly, don’t give up if no one agrees or replies. Form a long list of potential partners and try hard until you achieve your goal.

Another benefit is that you’ll gain experience and know what to do in the future to establish business relationships. As you can see, SEO link strategy is efficient in many areas.
