Hamish, You make some great points, however, I have a bit of alternative perspective to put out there. I'm on the "high end" of millennial. I was born in 1983 (I have a sister that was born in 1980 an GenXer). I don't see us as that different. I really loathe being lumped in with millennials. Why? Many of the stereotypes you've put forward are indeed stereotypes for a good reason. I find that the generation has not only become wholly reliant on technology but they are are addicted to it. Many simply couldn't function without blazing fast internet/wifi/LTE and they would especially not function well without their smartphones. What problems does this bring? Many don't know how to actually have an in-depth or even casual small talk with others. Many of them refuse to "talk on the phone" as they would rather text a stream of emoji or send an awkward snapchat. They have zero patience. Whether that is in traffic, waiting for something to be released, etc. They grew up with getting basically everything "right now". Obviously speed is a good thing in most situations but it doesn't teach perseverance. My biggest concern is the amount of millennials that only consume content from others without creating anything original themselves (sure many create a boat load of selfies, but that isn't exactly quality content). Sure there are plenty bucking the trend, but not enough. It is great to stay up to date and on the edge of innovation, however, their utter lack of retaining knowledge is frightening. Sure you can "Google" anything and everything, but many things are worthwhile to actually learn and retain.

There definitely is some great information to keep in mind with your article, however, I find some of it to be a bit out of date (e.g. Mootools and supporting IE6). Also there are great frameworks to allow you to prototype in code instead of creating static designs and then translating it to code, Twitter Bootstrap and Zurb Foundation are two of the most popular. Having Photoshop skills are great, but if you are looking for a much lower barrier to entry, consider using free and open-source software like GIMP (basically Photoshop) and Inkscape (similar to Adobe Illustrator) for your needs. In fact Inkscape's native file output is ".SVG" which is great since HTML5 picked up native support for SVG.

Although this could have a good impact, it could be perceived as negative as well. Why? Facebook has a terrible history with Privacy (or private information). I myself am disinclined to use such a service that will further track my habits and spending patterns. I am baffled by the notion that calling a business is such a "hassle". Heaven forbid we keep going this direction and lose all ability to communicate with one another vocally in the future. I dread a world where we only know how to construct thoughts using a random pattern of emoji.

Dun & Bradstreet compiles some really interesting analysis around speed of invoice payments (D&B Australian Trade Payment Analysis - http://dnb.com.au/article-tpa-3Q16-report.html#.WCpI9Vu9Y4A). The most recent report for the three months to September 2016 shows the national average time for an invoice to be paid is 45 days. As Alistair notes, large companies are often the slowest payers and use their position to stretch payment to suppliers, often 60 pays plus!

I do think that leaders need to live out the values they are saying the value and want the rest of the rest of the team to follow. The "do as I say, not as I do" mentality doesn't work. The other thing is transparency. As a leader you need to known failures. Stay humble and let the team know you will do better, don't just say it. Put your learning into action. Above all, remain teachable.

I think it is also important not to try to "win" on too many different social media platforms at the same time. Figure out a strategy that works on one platform before jumping onto another platform. Each ecosystem has unique quirks and a winning strategy on one doesn't mean you can replicate it on other outlets with the same response.

This is quite true , 10 high quality links is far better than 1 million spammy links. I think these days less is more in a way. I'm sure Google has something built into their algorithm , such as % of good links relative to non-good links and plugs this into the overall result. Which begs the question , 10 goods , 5 mediums , and 100 spams .. better or worse than 8 goods , 1 mediums , and 10 spams ? Hmm! https://www.purelocal.com.au

Thats right Jeff. Getting someone to help strategise and maybe write some key posts and pages for you is a good idea, but don't forget you can always re-purpose your content too after it's been written.
Jef LippiattOwner at Startup Chucktown
Very well stated points. I definitely see the benefit from getting an outside perspective on my material from time to time. I think another thing that is helpful is a content and copy guidelines document. This isn't meant to replace a copywriter rather enhance understanding. A copywriter can't help with every single written piece of communication. The guideline helps people keep the proper brand voice and tone intact for smaller tasks and communications.

@Jef ,Valid points, but like anything new, people are hesitant to get on board . According to statistics, The most active people on facebook and Instagram now are 45-50 yr olds. The very people that said they would never use the platform. Time will tell. The same goes for snap chat now, humans are creatures of habit. Once we are used to the certain way things work, we do not embrace change easily. It may, or it may not fly, let's revisit this discussion in 4-5 years.
Jef LippiattOwner at Startup Chucktown
I would be hesitant to roll anything Facebook related / owned into my business. They have a terrible privacy record and I don't think people associate Facebook with anything business related (meaning it would probably be hard to keep it from becoming cat videos and oversharing unnecessary information). I don't think Facebook Workplace is innovative at all. Asana, Basecamp, Slack and others all seemed to be well liked engaging solutions. Furthermore, open source options such as HumHub are essentially the same thing.
