Great article. I find that running most things manually helps connect with audiences better. Also, instead of just constantly posting pictures or links, try asking a question. I typically get higher engagement with questions. Also, try using a poll on Facebook or Twitter. Go for interactive and conversation. Also you need to avoid try to sell in every single post. Be genuine and create real discussion and content for your audience.

It is really encouraging to see Australian Marketing advisers and Marketers thinking and talking about working in social in a real-time context. It is daunting for most small business marketers to focus on trending conversation peaks, because of limited resources and possibly skills, but it represents a significant opportunity to deliver key messages into a naturally occurring conversation, which will give your organic publishing program a much greater impact, and reduce the need for paid support. Rony and Jeff have covered some key issues to watch out for though, which is great, as not all conversation has a positive sentiment and may not be right for your brand or goal.Getting this right is a key passion for our team at Metigy and we have been very focused on delivering AI based decision support tools to leverage this opportunity, which is why it is great to see thought leaders talking openly about the potential, which will only get easier to identify via monitoring technology. Feel free to check out what we are doing if it is interesting - https://metigy.com/
Always do a bit of research before jumping on a trending topic. There have been a couple of social media faux pas that was a result of simply poor research.

If the complaint is vexatious, and fraudulent and not a real customer... There are businesses out there under US jurisdiction that allow any person to write any defamatory content, unverified, and will refuse to remove it, and don't have to under US law. In this area I specialise, and sadly you then have to: a) Not be scammed by the SRM companies that will promise to 'bury' the false post; b) Get a court order against the poster, sending it to the site, deeming it defamatory with no guarantee of it being removed; or c) Attempt to travel down the road of 'Duffy vs Google' and sue the search engine for defamation as it is now case law that Google is a secondary publisher in Australia only. There are many types of extortion companies out there that will claim to remove false complaints including the complaint company hosting the page itself. You should never resort to paying them. In other cases involving certain your own copy and pasted information in the complaint or images you , you can easily file a DMCA takedown notice if it infringes your copyright.

Point well made Sarah. A significant proportion of Australian business owners also miss the fact that almost all of the major on-line business directory sites have automatically established listing for their business. An increasing number are (or have already), enabled consumer rating and testimonial facilities to assist people using the directory to get other's comparative opinions on listed enterprises. Every business owner should Google their business name and visit all of the (up to 20+) directories that are likely to have auto listed them. Many have an “is this your business” feature enabling you to claim and manage its content. Make sure you monitor them all as even an obscure industry or professional association directory can be the catalyst for a viral attack and a commercially damaging result that is invariably difficult to recover from.

@Jef ,Valid points, but like anything new, people are hesitant to get on board . According to statistics, The most active people on facebook and Instagram now are 45-50 yr olds. The very people that said they would never use the platform. Time will tell. The same goes for snap chat now, humans are creatures of habit. Once we are used to the certain way things work, we do not embrace change easily. It may, or it may not fly, let's revisit this discussion in 4-5 years.

I would be hesitant to roll anything Facebook related / owned into my business. They have a terrible privacy record and I don't think people associate Facebook with anything business related (meaning it would probably be hard to keep it from becoming cat videos and oversharing unnecessary information). I don't think Facebook Workplace is innovative at all. Asana, Basecamp, Slack and others all seemed to be well liked engaging solutions. Furthermore, open source options such as HumHub are essentially the same thing.

Hi Jeff. When using it for internal purposes the idea is to set up Secret groups that are invite only have House rules & guidelines. This solution is more for SME's not large corporates with hundreds of employees. There are also multiple solutions right. Have a good day

I think intranets are still fairly widespread at medium to large companies. However, I think internal social networking can be beneficial. I personally would tell you to steer clear of using Facebook (in any capacity for internal business communication). Why? It is a public social network. You may be setting yourself up for privacy nightmares (people leaving the company still in the group, people not being sure if they are posting to the internal or external company page, etc.). There are plenty of options for private business social networks both paid and free, open-source and hosted in the cloud. I believe it will be easier to set and uphold expectations on a social network that your business has full control over.

Loved reading your thoughts Jeff.

Lauren, I think the back current against Facebook is happening on several fronts: Business Owners - displeased with ad performance or frequent changes to the amount of their reach Late Gen X / Early Gen Y - realize amount of time wasted on platform, also want to move on to something that provides more value Millennials - typically have stale profiles, they tend to avoid Facebook because of their parents and family being on the platform. They prefer Instagram, SnapChat and other platforms. Facebook is trying to be and do too much within 1 platform. It reminds me of the terrible early internet days of AOL. Facebook is trying to "wall you into their internet". I say "their" because it is not an open or free internet. Facebook is constantly changing security/privacy settings without thought. And honestly I'd be surprised if more people weren't a bit uneasy about using the platform.
