The CovidSafe app by the Australian government makes contact tracing simpler and easier, keeping you and your loved ones safe.
It is highly likely Covid-19 will be here to stay until a vaccine is found. The CovidSafe app helps people to slowly return to a normal life without restrictive lockdowns, while still keeping themselves and other Australians safe. It aids in contact tracing, to prevent outbreaks in the community and slow down the transmission of the disease.
How does it work?
Using the Bluetooth on your smartphone, it will alert you if you come in contact with someone who has been tested positive for Covid-19. Currently, contact tracing is done manually where healthcare workers have to trace all the people who came in contact with a person recently tested positive for Coronavirus.
Those people will need to be alerted and asked to get tested or self-isolate in case they have also contracted the virus. This app will simplify and automate the process.
How do I use the CovidSafe app?
Download the CovidSafe app from the Apple Store or Google Play store. Once downloaded, you will need to register on the app, providing basic information such as your name, age-range and contact number.
You are not obligated to download and use the CovidSafe app. It is entirely voluntary.
The government has issued an act to protect users' privacy, allowing data to be accessed only by state health authorities to do contact tracing, and nothing else.
No other authority, including the police, Centrelink and other government bodies can get access to your data. This app will not be used to enforce self-isolation, but rather to alert you that you have come in contact with a person with Covid-19, so you can take the necessary steps to get tested, and so forth.
Furthermore, you will get a prompt to delete the app once the pandemic is over. The data is encrypted and stored using Amazon Web Services, one of the most secure data storage services.
