From an organic SEO perspective, I would say it is important to create content that meshes well with the rest of your website and your audience. Make article titles relevant to what the article covers (click bait headlines not only frustrate/anger users, but can actually lower your rankings in search engines).
Also focus the content of each page based on its purpose. If it is an "About Us" page don't spend a lot of time talking about your services or products. That type of page should talk about company background and team member bios.
Also ensure that the way your webpages or content management system (CMS) are structured help SEO not hinder it. You want to have "friendly" URLs (e.g. http://blog.com/2129391 = not good, http://blog.com/new-marketing-techniques = good). This is easier for users to remember and recall and also easier for search engines to crawl and associate with your site content.

Ranking in the search results is all about content creation and promotion. Without both of these in place, your content will simply get lost in the mix.
We are currently using a number of methods to improve our rankings (which are really good), using each of the methods below.
- High-quality blog content, case studies, and tutorials
- Social media to connect with new audiences and share blog content
- The creation of shareable content like infographics
- Guest blogging and article contributions on other sites
- Creating expert round ups of other top bloggers and industry influencers
- Getting interviewed on other podcasts and running a podcast of our own
Be sure to focus heavily on the content promotion aspect, as this is where the biggest power push for ranking in Google is going to take place.

I think it's best to step back first and understand how SEO fits into your marketing plan. Understand your target audience really well so that you know what they would be typing in google to find you and then what they want to see on your website.
Once you know what the keywords your target audience will use, make sure you use it in your content throughout your website where appropriate. Appropriate is key as google wants your website to read well.
Don't have any broken links.
Blog regularly using the keywords. Blog with useful content that will draw people to your website.
SEO can be lots of hard work, especially if you are competing with a lot of big businesses for the first page. There are so many factors. If you are not technical, focus on a good looking and user-friendly website with useful, up to date content and no broken links.
