In my experience, the best accounting systems for POS are Square Point of Sale and Shopify.

Square is the best overall software for POS. It's really easy to use, has loads of useful features and it's free. Square is really popular for small mobile businesses like pop up shops and food trucks as it allows you to take payments wherever you are. The app works with most Android and Apple devices and you can send customised receipts to customers via email.

Shopify is probably the best POS system out there for retail stores and now has over one million customers worldwide. Shopify is really easy to set up and can be customised along the way as your business grows. There isn't a free plan, but the basic subscription plan and fees are affordable.

Other options for POS accounting systems include:

  • Quickbooks - for accounting integration
  • Revel Systems - for customer loyalty programs
  • ShopKeep - for inventory management
