Which business are you REALLY in?

This was in Darren Hardy's blog, http://darrenhardy.success.com/2014/07/business-are-you-in.

My business is not the products or services I sell or offer.

Zappos is not in the online shoes business.  They are in Customer Service.

Nike is really in the business of courting, recruiting and managing celebrity athletes to endorse their products.

What is Amazon in?  Distribution.

What is your business in?

Hi Fleur,

Awesome question!

I guess in my business I can offer a range of products to create a healthy lifestyle. I can also offer an alternate income source for entrepreneurial mined people. My "job" is to listen to the client and see where I can help them, finding a solution to their needs. So I am in the consulting business!

Thank you for the reflection.

As business owners, we are all in the Marketing Business. Without marketing there are no customers, and without customers there is no business.

I really love this question and to be honest my answer to it has changed several times over the years. These days I am more likely to say, I am in the business of serving people to fill in the blanks or voids in their lives. When I think about it this way I seem to benefit as I see it ongoing, as it is passed along to others while we are all servicing our community and each other.
