Is there such a thing as too much marketing?

I have always felt that the perfect level of marketing would be where the prospects call up to complain that they are seeing too much advertising - but unfortunately never yet had that. Its really hard to achieve cutthrough to a customer with the number of channels, media, and other messages constantly rolling in so I would be inclined to too much rather than too little. That said usually you are restricted by budget and the time you can put into understanding all the different channels to ever do 'enough'

Is there an advantage to email over other online marketing channels?

I think the main benefit is that the social media feeds cannot ensure that your target clients have seen your message. Even if they have liked your page or followed you on twitter they simply may not get shown your items in the feed or may miss them. Well timed and useful emails will be opened, and you can often use services that will track reciept and opening, so you have a better sense if they have got your message.

What exactly is a content management system?

I think they say 70% of sites now are on Wordpress, which is a CMS that does manage the look of your site and has lots of integration's for forms, shopping carts, forums etc as well as the basic services of creating the site and the pages/blogs on it. We have used Wordpress for a while and it is pretty straightforward and you could run it yourself, but I would probably have someone do the initial setup for you, or use one of the online services where they provide the site with the wordpress system all configured as part of the hosting. Jeffs comments are relevant on the security issue, we did find ourself under attack for a while with hackers coming in and changing elements on the site - I guess if you have a large share of the market on one product then the hackers will try and do this. I haven't tried the alternatives as we have built up a lot of material on Wordpress over the years!
