Aside from LinkedIn, SEO, SMM, SEM, are there other ways to market to potential clients?

A couple of no-brainers. You can easily post an event on Facebook, personalise it and invite connections.

Also people see things through LI and Twitter, then if curious need to delve in and find out more information, so make sure you have a good website page explaining the benefits and location. Keyword rich of course, with obvious share buttons. (Please if you email it, also put the workshop location in your email -- it's a pet peeve when people don't do this).

Does anyone know a company who provide extended warranties service?

Yes I do, National Warranty Services has that service -- resellers too. Contact Don Card at nationalwarranties.com.au (The website looks straight out of 1996 but its a genuine business with offices in Redcliffe Qld).

What makes the best corporate Christmas gifts?

Wine and beer -- not so good if the recipient is trying to give up the plonk. I like specialty tea, mainly for women, for small gifts. Your own book or a really good business book makes a good Xmas gift. Not an eBook though - as some don't yet have an easy way to read it.

How long does it take to move your small business revenues to the cloud?

As a rank amateur in this, I would think that would depend on the number of clients and invoicing you have and whether you have a software system like MYOB. Do you mean invoicing, yes?  Please message for a recommendation of an accountant who takes smaller traders as well as larger, onto Xero. They speak plain English.

Can you recommend good web developers in Sydney?

When you're shopping for website designers, don't forget to check their:

Online portfolio - have the clients already moved on to another design? Do they seem customised or all the same?
Their Proposal - check functionality, site map and terms. Does it include at least some training on the back end?
Who will put in the 'content' and ensure its design is perfected?  (Anything under $1200 and you may not get formatted internal web page content).  Also, ensure you do not pay the developer's final invoice until the job is done and live. (Developers speak of 'content', whereas copywriters speak of copy)

I have worked with Red Planet Design for four years as copywriter (Brisbane), and I've seen it all. Work with someone you feel is helpful and trustworthy.

Can you recommend good business educational videos online?

Hi Rebecca,

If you're looking for free marketing advice that applies to all business... last week our local business referral group aired this sample video on "The Three Biggest Lead Generation Mistakes Small Business Can Make... and How to Overcome Them".  Just scroll down past the spiel, and hit play (no need to subscribe). 38 minutes. I found it encapsulated the key principles of good copywriting.

Who knows how much do copywriters charge to write a web page?

Hi all,

I believe that a developer in another country may not believe in the value of a copywriter who works in the Australian marketplace; one of the most expensive comparatively.  I am a freelance copywriter and editor, working with small businesses and consultants. Normally I quote around $115+ per page for a total re-write including keywords (normal page) and $260 for Home Page, but SavvySME has advertised my offer which has no strings attached for $88 inclusive for a normal page (e.g. About Us). It's a really good deal... normally you would be lucky to get good editing for this!

By the way, if you run a service and write your own About Us, it is perhaps difficult to see your own selling points and uniqueness. Often a great opportunity is missed.

You can see my offer in the Marketplace.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

What are the top SEO questions you like to be answered?

Hi Josh, since you asked... (and I used to host my email marketing with your company)

My client insists everyone in his industry posts different Google Places addresses for each suburban zone, but when I went onto Google they advise for mobile businesses going to their client (which he does) that you select "service at their location", no map pin, and then choose 25 kms from... I wonder if there is any difference - does the Places/map listing come up more often if there are 5 or 6 locations listed?

Does Your Website Appear where People are Looking?

Do you sell direct to business? Sensis e-Business Report (2012) mentions that 82% of all SMEs look for information online (often before buying online).  Sensis also reports that on average, 58 per cent of Australians with mobile phones now use their phone to access the internet, up from 50 per cent the previous year. Of all mobile smart phone users, 62 per cent have looked for information on prod...

Why is a Theme Important in Business Websites? Why Do I Need a Framework?

If you have discovered the joys of WordPress for SME websites, then you'll already know about Themes: the skin that is wrapped over your WordPress platform and adapted to suit the owner's needs. While a lone blogger might just load and adapt a new theme when one is out-dated, themes literally can make or break a business website. The reason is that as a business owner, you have normally paid a We...

How to generate more business for your web development agency?

I'm supposing that you want to sell web development to non-technical business managers / owners. Get really good at simplifying the benefits of what you do... volunteer to do a talk at the local Chamber of Commerce meeting, or similar meetup, but only use the space to talk about them and what they can get out of a professional website. Ensure they realise the cons of doing the outsourcing themselves or getting their 'cousin' to design it, and provide a set of screen grabs of a really nicely designed and navigable website of yours, right from the first click on the search engine to the contact form. In a small setting, just use your iPad to show them what a modern website looks like versus an outdated one.

Refrain from using the jargon of our industry, offer outcome-focussed information, and you'll make some new business contacts that think you're a really helpful person. Leave them your card/brochure and don't forget to follow up all interest.
