How do you celebrate your wins?

As someone who works from home on his own, a good Daddy Dance in front of the mirror often does it for me ;)

John Belchamber answered this question

Are leaders in SMEs keen on developing leadership skills?

Management is about measuring how often people do what you say, leadership is where they've done it without you mentioning it. Many small business owners only see the need to be a manager...

Small businesses often start with a 'technician' who makes money by being good at what they do and selling it. As they grow, they hire more 'technicians' to do what they have been doing so they can sell/deliver more. As they get more technicians, they start to employ 'administrators' to take some of the load of the technicians. Now the owner must becomes a manager not just a technician in order to make sure people are doing what they are supposed to. Many small business owners struggle to make the transition from technician to manager, but it's the next stage that (sadly) most small business owners never make...

For a business to be successful in the long term it needs to be able to operate when the founder/owner/original technician isn't around - a good business is a successful system, usually with people operating that system. When this is happening well, you have created a business that is worth something to others (customers, suppliers, potential buyers/investors, the next generation of family etc.).

BUT, for the business to become a system the owner needs to move from being a manager, to becoming a leader. The people and processes need to work without the owner being there....leadership make this happen. Hence., "leadership is where they've done it before you mentioned it".

Small Business Owners will remain just, that without becoming Small Business Leaders and building a business with real value.

How to manage multiple social media platforms with Squarespace?

Buffer was my favourite for scheduling a stream of posts across multiple channels at times when my followers were online. It integrates with just about every browser/device/readers service. However, I found that when I got poast their basic paid plan's account level it was far more expensive to use than Hootsuite.

Hootsuite keeps getting better. As Wendy says it's great for team work but it also has some other great features for listening to what people are saying and responding to them and excellent plugins for browsers that allow you to search what people are saying about a topic your looking at in your browser and/or the Google search you've just done. At AU$11 per-month for a paid account that allows up to 100 social media channels to be connected, it's good value too.

Oh yes, it also works with Google+ which I'm starting to find is better than FB and Twitter for making good B2B connections.

What star wars character are you my padawan?

Following on from Wendy Huang's article "I am Johnny Depp - what Myer Briggs Celebrity are you?", I came across this MBTI chart that fans of Star Wars are sure to love. Recruitment

How much do recruiters typically charge?

External recruitment fees (usually based on a percentage of salary) generally vary by industry, role type, salary level and how much 'up front' financial commitment and/or exclusivity you are prepared to give them. In this market, if you know how many people you are looking for and how much commitment you are prepared to offer, you should have far more leverage to negotiate on the fees and guarantee period given.

You can also consider outsourcing your recruitment function to an 'internal recruiter' who would act as if they were a member of your team. This is often far more cost effective as it can be based on a fixed fee or a per-hour basis and has the benefit of building your own candidate database rather than the recruiters. However, you might see a downside in that there is no replacement guarantee.

I hope that this helps you and am happy to chat further offline if you like.

I'm open with my profile on LinkedIn as I tend to only browse profiles that have caught my attention and am happy for people to see that I looked at their information. If they are curious to know why, I'm also happy for them to contact me and ask.

I do know several recruiters/head hunters who use the anonymous setting so you are not aware you're being 'considered' - often this is because the organization they are with doesn't want to be seen to be interested in you. As you say however, this is only as good as the time they remain anonymous.

What is a reasonable price for a small business website?

Charlotte,
I agree that you need to think about what you want and why.

I recommend Wordpress as it is easy to set up and importantly, maintain without ongoing professional developer support (with a little training). I recently set up a Wordpress site Kenmore & District Chamber Of Commerce which gave them a template, fully social media integration, e-commerce shopping cart and payment system, blog posting and more, the expenses including 1 years' hosting, domain, shopping cart license were less than AU$150. In that instance my time was donated, but but even if I charged you for all of this it would be between $1,500 - $2,000 in total (estimated).

Of course I do not know what you are looking to achieve exactly but am happy to talk further if you wish.

What Was Your Experience With Using Twitter For A Business?

I have different twitter accounts and have found them very useful for building new relationships and driving traffic to my websites. Indeed, I once got business just by sending a tweet which asked 'what would you like me to do for your business'.

I recommend you give it a try but don't expect the leads to flood in. Just as in face-to-face relationships, people need to get to know and trust you first.
