What’s the cost to build a Shopify, Squarespace, Wordpress or Magento store?

We specialize in Shopify as a Shopify Partner agency so I'll keep most of the detail to that platform (unsurprisingly I also think that it's the best platform for most ecommerce businesses from the choices listed in the question). As a general response though you will find the cost varies wildly between these platforms listed. They each require very different amounts of time to build on and the requirements of the business will also cause the cost to vary wildly. You could be looking at anywhere from $3K to $20K+.For a Shopify based website that is actually built to generate revenue (many aren't) and is purpose built for your products, business and market you should expect to pay a minimum of $3K up to $7K. I don't think you should be paying more than that. Having said that, the requirements of the build will heavily influence the cost. This is such a general question that it's hard to provide a decent estimate. Unfortunately with Shopify there are sooo many inexperienced people out there trying to get work building Shopify sites for $500 or a low figure like that. Avoid these like the plague. All they are doing is providing an off the shelf cookie cutter option. If that's all you can afford, fine. But don't expect to get great results with it.

How much do digital agencies charge to build a website for a small business?

There can be a huge variation in the prices charged for website development for small businesses. You can expect to be quoted anywhere from $500 up to $3000+ depending on your needs and the desired platform. The needs of the business will have a big influence on the price. A quote for a local service business will be different to an ecommerce business selling hundreds of products.  The quality and experience of the agency or individual involved will also impact on the price. Lower prices tend to reflect less experience or demand OR that the agency is applying template website frameworks rather than designing a unique website tailored to the market and business. As with anything, usually what you pay for is what you get. If you want a cheap price you will usually get a cheap website. You may also find that a low initial quote can balloon into greater costs as the project moves on and needs to cover additional work that was not included in the original cost. This sort of gouging is quite common. You need to make sure that the original price is the total for the project and there will be no "cost creep", get that in writing before you start. To avoid confusion, here's a few things that you should consider before you get quotes; What does the website need to do? Does it need to sell physical or digital products. Does it need to generate leads for offline conversions?Who will develop the sales copy etc for the websiteWhat marketing channels will be used to promote the website? This should have an impact on developmentWill the website be optimised for search engines (SEO) and pay per click advertising? Can the agency explain how they will do these things?Who is responsible for providing or developing the digital assets for the site (e.g logos, images, videos, pdfs)? This is often a sticking point that balloons costs. I would encourage small businesses to avoid the cheapest quotes. Your website is an investment and an asset for your business. Making the right investment will increase your results for years to come and add value to your business.

How much do web design services cost?

Web design services can cost anywhere from $1000 - $15,000+ depending on the type, scope and platform of the website. While it is possible to get sub $1000 prices, generally the design, code and structure of the website will be of very poor quality. The average price for a website is most likely in the $2000 - $3000 range for a full website.
