My Story: Corporate to Nomadic Writer and Entrepreneur

In hindsight, it took me a long time to find my feet and develop my brand – even today, 6 years in, I still think it is very much a work in progress. I have always worked in corporate – clocking in, doing the standard day and then going home in the evening. However in reality, that never presented me with anything interesting or even challenging. I was looking for something to sink my teeth i...

How will you be remembered?

If you, for whatever reason, decided to go out of business tomorrow, how will you be remembered?  And what will you be remembered for?  These are certainly two very interesting questions to dwell on.  What is and what should be might be two very different things. In business, what you are remembered for may often be personal as we have a tendency to sell ourselves as much as the product or ...

Letter writing - a forgotten art

Isn’t it amazing how far technology has come in such a short period of time.  Think of the first computer that entered our home and how about the early model mobile phones that resembled the size and shape of a brick.  Thanks to this advance in technology, we now have an abundance of tools to help us communicate more efficiently and because of this we have adapted the way in which we communi...

When you write do you envision your target market?

I speak to a lot of business owners and when I ask them this question, no is the common answer.  Should I?  Umm well yes, doesn’t it make sense?  If you don’t know who your target audience is, how can you write something which would be of interest or relevance to them? Think about it.  Once you sit down to analyse who your audience is, your posts will resonate with your target audience ...

5 tips to improve your proofreading

It doesn’t matter who you are, it is possible to read the same passage over and over again and not see an error that is glaringly obvious to someone else as soon as they lay their eyes on it.  Why?  Our brains work in mysterious ways but quite often they choose to see what we think is written on the page and not what is actually there. So here are 5 of my top tips to help proofread your own...

Is Crowdfunding For You?

Crowdfunding seems to be the new buzz word when it comes to fundraising a new business idea or business venture.  Have you crossed paths with it yet?  Chances are that someone you know has mentioned a friend or a colleague who is crowdfunding their latest venture and shared it for all to see.  After all social media is a powerful tool and works well to spread the crowdfunding message. Whethe...

Better bookkeeping

Admittedly bookkeeping is not one of my favourite aspects of business and it is one that I would quite happily outsource in a heartbeat.  Words, rather than number are my specialty, just ask my husband as I regularly forget important dates and telephone numbers which might otherwise have been useful on a number of occasions. For those that process their books in-house, there are ways in which ...

Do you pay for your social media?

For those who have been working with Facebook in terms of their social media for a lengthy period of time, you will know that at one point all was relatively good with your likes and insights and then over time there was a noticeable reduction in the amount of organic distribution.  Frustrating right?  What this essentially means for current day Facebook users is that business posts which are ...

Is linkedIn being neglected as a social media platform for business?

LinkedIn is one of many social networking sites I visit on a daily basis however whenever I view the profiles of my contacts, it is clearly noticeable that it is being neglected by those who use it.  And there seems also to be a clear disparity between the number of people who use LinkedIn and those who use Facebook – more opting for the latter. LinkedIn is clearly set up for those in profes...

Bad Publicity – How to Deal with It

As a business owner, bad publicity can have a detrimental impact on your business and can even threaten the viability of your organisation.  Bad publicity is not something you can necessarily plan for – at least the timing anyway! Take the recent Victoria’s Secret breastfeeding scandal as an example.  One of their staff members in their Austin based store in Texas refused to allow a mothe...

Asked this question - Social Media

How important is grammar and syntax in social media?

I would say it is very important.  Of course we all make mistakes and the odd error slips through (particularly noticeable after we hit the post or send button) but if the text is laden with errors then I am definitely going to take the organisation or the individual less seriously.  If you want to look professional regardless of your field, then my advice would be to take care in all that you do and write.
