In my previous life I worked as a Forensic Scientist in Scotland. I quickly realised there wasn't enough fun or sun in either the country or the industry so headed off as a backpacker to find myself. I ended up in Sydney funding my trip by working as a telemarketer and so began a long career in sales. I founded Forrest Marketing Group in 2006 to deliver professional corporate telemarketing and outbound sales and to surround myself with a group of people who love talking as much as I do.

Are you throwing the baby out with the bathwater? The value of early engagement in B2B marketing

Are you throwing the baby out with the bathwater? The value of early engagement in B2B marketing I’m a fan of digital marketing, online content creation and SEO. I really am. They’re effective strategies that generate leads in the form of qualified, knowledgeable purchasers who have a demonstrated need. So effective, in fact, that many companies have shifted resources from direct lead generati...

R-E-S-P-E-C-T Successful B2B Selling

We've all heard the song Aretha Franklin released back in 1967. "Respect" was written and recorded by Otis Redding two years earlier, but Franklin added her unique twist. R-E-S-P-E-C-T she sang, Find out what it means to me. Take care, TCB. TCB? That refers to Take Care of Business. Over the years, Franklin's version of "Respect" has become known a feminist anthem. And rightly so. Women...

Approaching Gatekeepers in B2B Selling: What Not To Do

When I saw the headline "How to handle gatekeepers and reach decision-makers" -- I was interested.OK, I admit it. I was excited! Yes, I thought, here’s an online article I can share with my business-to-business (B2B) sales team – tips on how to handle phone conversations with receptionists, personal assistants and others who can help us gain access to C-suite executives. How wrong I was. ...

Singing to Your Customers – A Tale of Relationship Success

Once upon a time, in a prosperous kingdom far, far away, the local monarch’s beautiful daughter, Princess Kylie, was bored with all the marriage proposal letters she received each day from potential suitors in neighbouring lands. Every morning Gwen, her lady-in-waiting, would leave another pile of 20 or 30 on her bedside table. Princess Kylie would sit back against her pillows, munching a piece...

Business to Business Selling - It's Personal

Sales managers sometimes ask me why their latest business-to-business (B2B) campaign failed. “I was sure it’d be a success,” one said to me. “We had everything in place. A great product. A truly unique selling proposition. We understood our prospects’ corporate requirements and purchasing processes. I don’t get why the results didn’t live up our expectations.” I have a pretty goo...

Networking: How to Have a Conversation with Anyone

We often hear that networking is essential to business success. Yet to be honest, few of us are good at it. We either avoid it altogether, or when we enter a face-to-face networking situation, we fail to engage and make the most of the opportunities it presents. Why is that? A key reason, I believe, is fear - a simple fear of conversations. This may seem far-fetched. However, social anxiety is ...

Cold Calling is Alive and Kicking

In 1897, newspapers reported the death of the great American writer Mark Twain. Twain responded by telling journalist Shelley Fisher Fishkin that “the report is greatly exaggerated.” In recent years, a number of media commentators have reported the death of cold calling. The upsurge in social media and online lead generation, they argue, has created a business environment in which we no longe...

How To Build Rapport On The Phone – 10 Key Steps To Success

At a recent sales conference, I took notes as the keynote speaker argued that our words account for only 7% of our communication effectiveness. Tonality accounts for 38% and body language 55%.  The speaker’s point was that salespeople should focus more on body language to improve their effectiveness.  What happens, though, when your prospect is on the other end of a phone line?  You then ...
