Are there better alternatives to oDesk?

As mentioned above it really does depend on the project(s) you are looking to outsource. But you will find plenty of Australian VA directory sites that can accept RFP. Try Virtually Yours Virtual Assistants, Australian Virtual Business Network or Australian VA Association.
Remember Virtual Assistants are really Virtual Professionals, they have a huge variety of skills and experience.

Do you follow your competitors on social media?

A benefit of social media is to listen to the conversations. Not only what people are saying about your business, but also your industry and your competitors. To not follow your competitors will do your own business a disadvantage.
And Sandy, you are spot on with regards to clients concerns about negative feedback on social media and your response to them. Exceeding your clients expectations will lead to satisfied customers. But social media has the added advantage of loyal clients responding to comments left by others of a negative nature. The response is so much more powerful when it comes from a client versus the business owner! Ah the power of Raving Fans!

Are you getting value from your email list?

Frequency & Content are the two big keys. If the communication is issued too frequent and has little relevant content subscribers will reduce. It's a fine line between tell your clients what they want to hear and sharing with them what's important to your business. Always review the content from the recipients perspective, add value and your list will steadily grow.

What is one thing about your business that others want to know?

I like your question Ingrid, and I will try to provide a short answer! With my industry - Virtual Assistance - the main thing that others don't know about is that we exist, especially in the regional areas. The attraction with partnering with a VA varies on the client needs and their business goals, and the benefits are varied. But what I really want to tell business owners about VAs is 2 things - VAs care about your business success and we are collaborative!
Virtual Assistant work very well to support small business.

What is good Customer Service?

Last year I established my own business. Like most small business owners, I spent (and continue to spend) a great deal of time reading and researching the best practises, tips and smart ideas to ensure my business succeeds. What amazes me is the lack of focus regarding the importance of actual Customer Service. Much of the content I have read was focussed on sales & numbers! Having spent over ...

How much does an australian virtual assistant (VA) cost?

Great question Nick, and great answer Sandra.
I agree with Sandra, Australian VAs will charge more than the Asian based VAs and outsourcing overseas is always a little more risky. Remember to consider - Timezone differences, Language barriers and being able to contact your VA in an emergency.
You also need to consider your reasoning for partnering with a VA. Generally speaking most business owners who are looking for a VA are looking for a long term business partnership. So when selecting a VA the business owner must be comfortable with the VAs ethics, work quality (as you mentioned Nick), time management and of course cost. But just being able to get along is always important.
Another thing to remember, is the Australian VA Industry is very collaborative and supportive. So if your current VA is unable to complete your latest work, she will know another VA within her network who can help you.
Best business success wishes,
Sam
