Has anyone ever found a recruiter that is worth it?

Hi Cameron,

These days with LinkedIn, Seek Profile etc, it is more economical to do your own recruitment unless you are busy or your company mandates that you use recruitment agencies to avoid nepotism.

Recruiters are useful if you wish to head hunt ie recruit staff from your competitors; or if you do not wish to disclose that you are hiring or the amount you are willing to pay.

Cheers

Is near enough good enough for SMEs?

Hi Neil,

I prefer the "Golf Approach". It is a technique that I learnt from a workshop conducted by the VP of Productivity at HP, USA. He said that they used it successfully at HP. It is similar to the "Agile" method. The difference is that the "Golf Approach" has fewer iterations and more definitions. I find it a useful technique.

Steps:

1. Work out where the flag is ie final objectives or final vision.

2. Work out the Minimum Viable Product ie something you can sell.

3. Tee off. Meet or exceed Minimum Viable Product with your allocated budget and schedule.

4. Re-evaluate & obtain feedback & plan where your next shot/phase should be. Whack the ball.

5. Repeat until you get to the objective.

Advantages:

1. Avoid gold plating - previously HP spends money and time developing features that users do not want.

2. Avoid short sighted goals or re-engineering because the first MVP cannot be extended to meet final market expectations.

3. Allow for market segmentation - Phase 1 product is inexpensive. Phase 2 product costs more etc.

4. When good ideas appear as they always do, this technique allows you to slot it into the correct phase eg great idea but it is expensive so we slot it in phase 3 when we have more revenue.

PS: The VP is probably an avid golfer.

Cheers

How do you start building a website?

Hi Ling

Adding to what Jacquie said. Steps to take are not dissimilar from starting any projects. Here is a suggestion:

a. Objectives - What are your objectives? What do you hope to achieve?

b. Budget, Schedules and Reliability - What is your budget? When do you want it by? How stable should it be eg downtime not important or downtime will affect the reputation of your company?

c. Research - Look at various web sites. What appeals to you? Which will help further the objectives? Talk to friends and companies about pricing and timing and web hosts. Free web sites or pre-defined sites or fully customized.

d. Decisions - Decide on the project.

e. Execution - Do it yourself or hire someone to do it.

f. Post analysis & tuning - Have your objectives been met? Is tuning and adjustments needed? What lessons have you learnt.

Cheers

How do you identify and prevent dastardly digital downloads?

A good anti-virus software is important.

Avast is a free antivirus which prevents you from going to dodgy web sites or receiving virus/trojan attachments.

Endpoint protection (see above) is an inexpensive enterprise solution. (PS: I do not know Shaun or IT Systems Solution but I know Endpoint Security.)

Note: Firewalls are mandatory and a must. However, the new breed of malware can tunnel thru firewalls. So a good security system has to have several layers. I no longer use "Zone Alarm". I use Avast for home computers but will use Norton or Endpoint for business computers.

What are your experiences with outsourcing the development of your digital platform offshore?

As with all things, it depends on who you hire. I hired a guy from the Philippines and he was very good. He is in the top 25 percentile as compared to other Australian developers.  He was recommended by a colleague. I suppose recommendations are important eg doctors, lawyers, physio...

Communications is important - My impression is that outsourcing companies in Philippines and India can be as good as Australian outsourcing companies. Others are duds. It is not the dollars you spend. Say you save 50% as compared to a quote from an Australian outsourcing company but the Indian outsourcing company did not understand your requirements and delivered a dud - it would seem that you have wasted 50% of your money as opposed to saving some money.
