Hi,
I have had a number of online businesses over the past 4-5 years while I learnt how the internet worked. I currently have a number of online businesess that involve Qr Codes.
I am also interested in learning more via podcasts and other online information places.
Working from home I have found that I need the interaction of meetup groups etc to discuss issues I have but also to get new ideas and handing on information I have gained over the years.

How many of you are using video as part of your marketing strategy?

Hi,
I have been helping a client recently with video who is just starting out. We were able to cost save by going to fiverr.com and had a lady from Queensland do a really good intro video for the website $45.00 with extras. Then we just did home video showing that the owner of the business as  an 'expert' in his products, uploaded to YouTube. Total cost just some time editing the videos. Worked really well for us and our clients. We even used Qr codes to play the videos attached to the products.
Good luck

Who knows how much do copywriters charge to write a web page?

Hi,
I have read the above comments and would like to add a comment which has nothing to do with pricing.
When getting a copywriter make sure they understand SEO as you may have the greatest website text ever but if good old Google search cannot list you it will turn into a brochure online.

Who uses video marketing for their business?

Hi,I think there are a couple of issues here with video.
The first is once you have a video and upload to youtube I think you score 'brownee' point with Google SEO.
The second is the quality. That is, what do you need to achieve by the video. There is the Corporate branding, or showing customers you are a 'expert' in the field..I watch a number of business videos on youtube and I like the expert type that are normally shot with little equipment.
For Branding intro video's I have found www.fiverr.com very, very cheap and high quality. For my own videos I just use my own video camera and the editing software that came with the camera. For product shots I use a 'Lazy Susan' and just spin the product around. Once you get the light right it is quite simple.

One last thing, if you create a video, watermark it as your competitors may use it. There are a number of free product out there that can watermark videos.

What basic computer knowledge do I need for a startup?

HI,
I am/was in the same boat as you so I started going to a lot of meetup and eventbrite meetings. Nearly every one I went to I found something new. This could be a starting point for you. As an example I went to a WordPress meetup in my local suburb, there are only about 10 people who go but 2 of the guys that present each month not only have WordPress but wealth of information on most aspects of the web world. They bend over backwards to help an any aspect or they will know where to get information. You would pay hundreds of dollars for a consultation out side the group and I get it for free. How good is that :)

How important is the National Broadband Network for businesses?

Hi,

Sorry I have to disagree :) Right here right now I believe that the majority businesses have little use for the high speed internet. Most businesses are lucky to have a website and very few have online ecommerce so a high speed would be of little use.
I do however think that we should try and get high speed to the likes of hospitals etc that can use the speed.
I think that what money we are going to spend will benefit a very few such as video on demand and tv channels etc why should we pay to help them make a profit. I have found that I am watching Catchup tv more and have no issues with the speed.

A question which I am sure someone will answer. What could I add to my website that I cannot already do that high speed will help? or is the high speed internet just for delivering to me or my business, if so, maybe they should spending the money on ways of getting it to me

What Are Top Media Or Marketing Related Questions In Business?

Hi,

I have been to a lot of meet ups, BNI etc and met a lot of 'media' people and when I ask them to explain what they actually do their definition of media is all over the place. I have had media explained from printing brochures (and I mean only printing brochures) to all the online media from LinkedIn and Facebook. My question, or more a statement, is say what you do.

"I print brochures..."
'We do SEO.. " is that media ?
"We handle all online Facebook accounts..."
"We help setup your Facebook accounts for you to manage..."
"We manage your blog.."
"Our company handles campaigns...

All to often it takes some time to explain how they can  actually help my company.
By doing this I will get a better understanding if they can help my company or not.
Don't know if that helps answer your question.

Are there better alternatives to oDesk?

Hi,

I use http://www.freelancer.com/ and have been for over 4 years and 7 projects. I think the main thing to look for when finding a freelancer is getting someone who will do the job. For example in Freelancer the freelancer has jobs Applied for, jobs they have Received and jobs Done. To help in the rating and looking good they sometimes apply for jobs they are not much interested in doing. When they get the job they keep you online as long as possible so the Jobs Received look good.

What is your perception of an accountant or financial advisor?

Hi Paul.
Going off in a slightly difference but related angle to this question is the statement  "find a good accountant/financial adviser'". The only way I am able to do this, as I see it, is find the bad ones first!
In my mind you need to get over this perception first and the rest will come to you.
I have spoken to a number of financial advisers etc who can only give generic advice ( "you need to get onto multi media") or selling products from some form of franchised concept.
Taking the time to visit the client also helps.
Don't know if this helps

What backup recovery measures do you have for your business?

Hi,
I agree with the above comment.
I used to work in systems support for Telstra and Australia Post. We missed the most important point of backups. It's not the backup that's the issues (thats simple, see above) the real issue is restoring tha data. We found:
1. We did not backup all or correct data (including drivers etc)
2. We could not restore the data (corruption and/or access)
3. If your operating system goes how can you get access to the data. That is, do you have a boot disk, will it allow you access to the cloud or even your USB drives.
The porblem is most of us are to scare to delete current data and restoring from backup to see if it works:)

Does either .com or .com.au domain have an advantage? ✅

Hi,

I have a laymans point of view about domain names. On the whole there are maybe 4 ways a domainname will be found/used.

1. They type it from a business card etc

2. Find it on a Google search

3. Click thu from another site.
4. Someone guessing the domainname.

In my  opinion none of the first 3 of the above will care what your domain name (com or com.au) is as long as it has something relevent to your business name. Only the forth one would you require the .au and most people will include it in Australia
